  • Format: cell bodies of preganglionic neurons in a brain nucleus or sp cd gray matter, then the preganglionic fibers travel with Cranial nerves, then preganglionic fibers synapse onto post ganglionic neurons whose cell bodies are in a peripheral nucleus, then the POSTganglionic fibers travel with cranial nerves, then the post ganglionic fibers innervate target organs which respond

*location of preganglionic neuron cell bodies: upper midbrain- Edinger-Westphal nucleus
*route of preganglionic fiber: travel with CN III
*loc of post ganglionc cell bodies: ciliary ganglion (attached to V1)
*route of postganglionic fibers: travel w/ short ciliary nerves
*target organ->response: -sphincter pupillaem->pupil constriction
-ciliary m->lens accomodation for near vision
*injury: mydiasis (pupil dilation) due to sphincter pupillae,
loss of accomodation due to ciliary m

  • loc of preganglionic nueron cell bodies: pons-superior salivatory nucleus
  • route of preganglionic: thru nervous intermedius+geniculate ganglion via greater petrosal n to nerve of pterygoid canal
  • loc of postganglionic neuron cell bodies: pterygopalatine ganglion (attached to V2)
  • route of postganglionic fibers: via zygomaticotemporal n (V2) and lacrimal n (V1)
  • target organ->response: lacrimal gland+mucosa of nasal cavity, nasopharynx+palate->lacrimation
  • injury:loss of lacrimation leads to dry cornea

  • loc of preganglionic neuron cell bodies: pons-superior salivatory nucleus
  • route of preganglion fiber: thru nervous intermedius (VII) and geniculate ganglion (VII) via chorda tympani (VII) it joins lingual n. (V3)
  • loc of post ganglionic fibers: submandibular ganglion (attached to V3)
  • target organ->response: submandibular and sublingual salivary glands->salivation
  • injury: loss of salivation

injury to CN VII summary

A
  • injury distal to stylomastoid foramen-> facial muscle paralysis
  • injury proximal to branching off of chorda tympani->facial muscle paralysis, loss of taste (ant 2/3rds of tongue), loss of salivation from sublingual and submandibular glands
  • injury distal to geniculate ganglion->everything of injury proximal to branching off of chorda tympani PLUS hyperacusis (due to paralysis of stapedius m.)
  • injury with involvement of greater petrosal n.-> everything of injury distal to geniculate ganglion PLUS loss of taste (palate) and loss of lacrimation

  • loc of pre ganglionic neuron cell: medulla- inferior salivatory nucleus
  • route of preganglionic fibers: exit brain w/ CN IX fibers, then pass thru tympanic n. and lesser petrosal n.
  • Loc of post ganglionic neuron cell bodies: otic ganglion (attached to V3)
  • route of post ganglionic fibers: via auriclotemporal n.
  • target organ->response: parotid gland->salivation
  • injury: loss of salivation from parotid gland
