MFES personnel are obligated to provide emergency medical care to all patients who require it. What are the three exceptions?

A
  • Patients displaying obvious signs of death
  • A properly identified physician takes patient care
  • A valid DNR is provided for the patient

  • Patient is VSA
  • Valid DNR
  • No resuscitation efforts being performed
  • Request paramedics be updated

What are the three things that make a DNR form valid?

A

1) 7-digit serial number located on upper right corner of the form
2) Form filled out and signed by:
- Medical doctor (MD), or
- Registered nurse (RN), or
- Registered practical nurse (RPN)
3) The patient’s name matches the DNR

If requested to leave the patient or the premises, MFES personnel shall: (3)

A
  1. leave the patient or premise
  2. notify comms that patient access is denied
  3. request police attend the scene
    * Comm will notify police, CO will update ambulance and police on their arrival

DNR form can be revoked when? (3)

A
  • Patient wishes to have resuscitation efforts made (even if request is vague or uncertain)
  • “Substitute decision maker” decides resuscitation effects be made
  • a physician or nurse determines the plan of treatment now includes resuscitation efforts
  • If DNR cannot be validated crews will err on the side of life
