Narcolepsy
A rare sleep problem in which people suddenly fall asleep no matter what time it is or where they are-muscles completely relax + in REM sleep

Awareness of the environment: conscious or aware of things outside yourself
Consciousness
Awareness of things inside and outside ourselves
Sense of Self
Being aware of ourselves and our existence
Altered State
When a person’s sense of self or sense of the world changes
Examples- sleep, hypnosis, drugs, meditation
Unconscious (Level)
“Subconscious”
Is available to awareness under most circumstances; info is hidden
Selective Awareness
Focusing on a particular stimulus
Stage 1 of sleep
Lightest sleep; theta waves - lasts 30-40 minutes
Stage 2 of sleep
Traditional stage of sleep
Stage 3 of sleep
Deep sleep; delta waves
Stage 4 of sleep
Deepest of sleep; delta waves - most difficulty waking up - lasts 30 minutes and goes to REM sleep
REM sleep
Rapid-eye-movement sleep
- most vivid dreams
- Deprived=learn more slowly + forget more rapidly
NREM sleep
Stages 1,2,3 and 4
Dreams are vaguer + more fleeting
Beta waves
Emitted by the brain when we are awake; short and quick
