Physiology of Birth Flashcards
What are the three physiology changes in birth?
Circulation
Oxygen
Nutrition
What closes parts of the fetus circulation
Foramen oval
Ductus arterios
Ductus venosis
Why does the foramen oval close?
Pressure changes in atria
Why does the ductus arterios close?
Increased oxygenation of blood
Why does ductus venosis close?
Don’t know why
After birth, fetus blood now goes where?
Goes to the lungs and liver
After birth, what decreases for newborns?
the pulmonary vascular resistance decreases
What does the reduction of pulmonary vascular resistance cause?
reduces resistance to blood flow through the lungs
After birth, what increases for newborns?
the systemic vascular resistance increases
What does the increase in systemic vascular resistance cause?
increases aortic pressure and pressure in left atrium and ventricle
How do we know if the circulation is transitioning well?
Check for
- HR
- RR
- Cap refill on sternum
- Blood pressure in all four extremities
When newborn is born, if all is good what are the normal findings?
Neonates begin to breathe within seconds
Normal RR within less than a minute
When is breathing initiated?
by sudden exposure to exterior world and slightly asphyxiated state
What might interfere with that?
Meconium
Cord compression
How long can neonates without breathing?
Neonates can survive as long as 10 minutes without breathing
