7.1- Mechanisms Of Evolution Flashcards
(8 cards)
What is a species?
A group of organisms with members that reproduce among themselves in their natural environment.
What does evidence from observations of fossils indicate?
Living things have changed through time and are still changing.
What is evolution?
Change in the hereditary features of a species over time.
What did Jean Baptiste de Lamarck propose?
Species evolve by keeping traits parents develop during their lives. He was wrong.
Where did Charles Darwin travel in the mid-1800’s?
The east and west coasts of South America.
What was the most special thing Darwin saw in his travels?
The thirteen species of finches.
What did Darwin’s observations suggest?
Organisms with more favorable traits for their environment survive and pass their traits on to their offspring.
What is natural selection?
Organisms with traits best suited to the environment live long enough to reproduce.
