Animal and Plant Cell Organelles Flashcards
(15 cards)
What are the two cell types?
Prokaryotic and Eukaryotic
What is a cell membrane?
A structure that forms the outer boundary of the cell. (It allows only certain materials in and out of the cell and is made up of double layer of molecules)
What is the nucleus?
The largest structure in the cytoplasm of a eukaryotic cell. It directs all activities of the cell.
What is chromatin?
A long thread made of proteins and DNA, a form of hereditary material.
What is cytoplasm?
The gelatin like mixture inside the cell membrane. It contains many chemicals including a large amount of water.
What are organelles?
The structures within the cytoplasm of a cell. Each one has a specific job.
What is endoplasmic reticulum (ER)?
A folded membrane that moves materials around in a cell.
What are ribosomes?
Small, two-part structures that receive directions from the hereditary material for how and when to make specific proteins.
What are Golgi bodies?
Membrane-covered sacs that package cell products to be moved out of the cell.
What are mitochondria?
Organelles where food molecules are broken down and energy is released.
What are lysosomes?
Organelles that contain digestive chemicals that break down food molecules, cell waste, and worn out cell parts.
What is a cell wall?
A rigid structure that is made of bundles of tough cellulose fibers that supports and protects a plant cell.
What are chloroplasts?
The green organelles that contain chlorophyll, a green pigment that traps light energy.
What are tissues?
Groups that organize cells.
What is an organ?
A structure made up of different types of tissues that work together to do a particular job.
