7th Grade 4.1- Cell Growth And Division Flashcards
(10 cards)
What is mitosis?
Mitosis is the process in which the nucleus divides to form to identical nuclei (which are identical to the nucleus).
What are chromosomes?
Chromosomes are structures in the nucleus that contain hereditary material.
What happens in asexual reproduction?
On a sexual reproduction, a new organism is produced that has hereditary material identical to the DNA of the parent organism.
What are the steps in the Cell Cycle?
Interphase, prophase, metaphase, anaphase, and telophase.
What happens during interphase?
During interphase, a cell grows, makes a copy of its DNA, and prepares for cell division.
What happens during cell division?
In cell division, the nucleus divides, and then the cytoplasm separates to form two new cells.
Which cells in your body can no longer divide?
The nerve and muscle cells no longer divide.
What happens during prophase?
During prophase, duplicated chromosomes become fully visible. The nucleolus and the nuclear membrane disintegrate. Two centrioles move to opposite sides of the cell and spindle fibers stretch across the cell.
What happens in metaphase?
In metaphase, the duplicated chromosomes line up across the center of the cell. Each centromere becomes attached to two spindle fibers.
What happens during anaphase?
Each centromere divides. The identical chromosomes separate and begin to move to opposite ends of the cells.
