Q

What does how much you should drink depend on?

A
The environment (e.g. a desert)
The temperature (you need to drink more when it is hot)
The amount of exercise/activity you are doing (the more exercise you do, the more you need to replace water - this is called rehydration).

Q

What are the effects of dehydration?

A
  • it thickens the blood (increases viscosity) which slows blood flow down
  • the heart rate increases meaning the heart has to work harder. This can cause irregular heart rate (rhythm)
  • Reaction time increases. It gets slower and general reactions are poorer
  • an individual may suffer muscle fatigue and/or muscle cramps.
