Hydration Flashcards
1
Q
Define hydration.
A
Having enough water (water balance) to enable normal functioning of the body.
2
Q
Define dehydration.
A
Excessive loss of body water interrupting the function of the body.
3
Q
Define rehydration.
A
Consuming water to restore hydration.
4
Q
Why do we need to drink enough water?
A
It assists with the body’s functions. It helps with reactions, lubrication and maintains our bodies temperature.
5
Q
How much water should you drink per day?
A
8 large glasses.
6
Q
What does how much you should drink depend on?
A
The environment (e.g. a desert) The temperature (you need to drink more when it is hot) The amount of exercise/activity you are doing (the more exercise you do, the more you need to replace water - this is called rehydration).
7
Q
What are the effects of dehydration?
A
- it thickens the blood (increases viscosity) which slows blood flow down
- the heart rate increases meaning the heart has to work harder. This can cause irregular heart rate (rhythm)
- Reaction time increases. It gets slower and general reactions are poorer
- an individual may suffer muscle fatigue and/or muscle cramps.
8
Q
What is the rapid recall for dangers of dehydration?
A
THRST
TH - thickens blood
RS - reactions slow
T - temperature increases.
