List the main types of infectious agents that cause disease in humans.
Viruses, bacteria, fungi, protozoa and helminth parasites
List the key differences between prokaryotes and eukaryotes
- Prokaryotes dont have internal membranes
- Prokaryotes are haploid (single copy of chromosome) while eukaryotes may be diploid.
- Eukaryotes have a cytoskeleton much more defined than that of prokaryotes
- Prokaryotes habe a cell wall made of peptidoglycan
What is septicaemic disease characterised by?
Rapid progression, septic shock, and severe inflammatory response.
How do protozoa replicate?
In the host by binary fission, or by the formation of trophozoites inside a cell.
Give some examples of protozoa
Malaria and Leishmaniasis (causes leishmania)
What are helminth parasites?
Roundworms, flatworms or tapeworms which are visible to the naked eye. They have a complex life cycle with many hosts.
How do heminth worms replicate?
They lay eggs in the small intestine which are then released in the feces of the infected person. Transmitted by the fecal-oral route.
How do viruses replicate?
Budding out of the host cell
