Q

What is the origin of the kidneys?

A
Pronephros
(rudimentary and non-functional)
↓
Mesonephros
(appears in 4th week, function as interim kidneys)
↓
Metanephros
(starts to function around 9-10th week)

The metanephros develops into two main sources, the ureteric bud and the metanephrogenic blastema:

Ureteric bud
• gives rise to the: ureter, renal pelvis, collecting ducts and calyces
Metanephrogenic blastema
gives rise to the glomerulus and renal tubules up to and including the distal convoluted tubule
