  • July 1914: war breaks out due to Archduke assassination
  • Triple Entente v. Triple Alliance
  • 1915: Lusitania passenger ship and 128 deaths
  • Neutrality
  • Germans continued sinking ships
  • US threatened cutting diplomatic ties
  • Sussex Pledge: agreement by German gov to stop sinking non-military ships
  • Above = broken as Germany sunk all ships entering warzone
  • Neutrality
  • Zimmerman Telegram intercepted
  • April 2 1917: Congress declared war against Germany to “protect democracy”
  • Russia left to fight Bolshevik Revolution
