W8 L1 - Intro to UI & UX Flashcards

1
Q

What is interface

A

A point of interconnection/interaction between a system and anything else

User Interface
Field of study: Human Computer Interaction (HCI)

Q

What is user interface?

A
  • The part of the system which the user sees, hears, touches, speaks to, gestures at
  • In future: smells and tastes?
  • Command Line Interface (CLI)
  • For nerds Visual Graphical User Interface (GUI)
  • Speech and auditory
  • The best form of interface is where the user feels like it is part of them

Q

What is user interaction

A

All the ‘steps’ done by user in order to accomplish a task

Behavioural – what is natural for the user
the sequence of the actual acts of seeing, hearing, touching, or speaking

Visual - graphical representations: typography, pixel density, icons, etc.

  • Think phone call answer is green, decline is red
  • The user interface brings structure to user interaction
  • Goal is minimise interaction – fewer number of steps to accomplish a task the better – makes it more efficient for user, you use the system to achieve a goal, the faster the better

Q

What is User Experience

A

How the user feels when interacting with the interface.
Perception
Very subjective

UXD or UED: User experience design
Beyond HCI
Usability; many factors; hard to measure, therefore hard to ‘get right’

UX – bringing UI and UI* TOGETHER
All about the users perception
Designers should keep in mind – the user is never wrong, as a designer you need to cater to all possible users
–> Their Experience is based on the use of the system and if they have a and experience this could ruin your rep with them

Q

What is the purpose of a GUI? How should one design a GUI? What is the primary goal of GUI design?

A
  • A Graphical user interface (GUI) is important because it allows higher productivity, while facilitating a lower cognitive load.
  • A major advantage of GUIs is that they make computer operation more intuitive, and thus easier to learn and use. GUIs generally provide users with immediate, visual feedback about the effect of each action. GUI allows multiple programs and/or instances to be displayed simultaneously.

Q

What are 3 reasons for IT project failure and how else apart from investing in UX can they be addressed? (Think SDLC tasks.)

A
  1. Badly defined requirements
  2. Poor communications among customers, developers and users
  3. Stakeholder politics

To address this carry out:

  • stakeholder interviews
  • user research
  • user testing
  • user centred design

It costs 100 times more to change the errors after development than it does to change it before development

Q

What does the ROI of UX measure?

A
  • conversion rate - % increase visits to the website, or actions taken
  • number of registrations
  • fewer number of abandonments
  • number of calls to help desk
  • can reduce the amount of training (if internal software)
  • development time
  • time
  • errors
