W10 L3 - System Migration & Conversion Flashcards

1
Q

What are the 2 conversions styles - the how

A

Direct (direct cutover)
- Say you have an old system and you move to another, you go straight to another one. need to be very org

Parallel (parallel operation)
- old system and have new system and there is a period where the two systems work in parallel

Need to ask about the risk, cost and the time
Direct has highest risk, Parallel Lower Risk
Parallel cost more
Parallel will take longer

Q

What are conversion locations - the where

A
  • Define location - could be different countries, franchises, departments etc
  • Simultaneous - roll out system at each location at the same time, you do not pick which location. Higher risk,
  • Phased - systematic, find a logical way of roll out; study and see how that goes before implementing everywhere. Higher cost, every instal has baseline cost. Will take longer as well.
  • Pilot - want a high risk pilot location, you want to see the worst case scenario.

Q

What is a Business Contingency Plan

A
  • A Plan B essentially if the roll over to a new system does not go the way you thought it would
  • Withstand relatively small problems with the new system so that major business disruptions are prevented.
Varies between large and small projects/system implementations.
