What was Stalin’s policy towards women?
Stalin reversed the Bolshevik policy towards women and the family
Women became members of the workforce, and had to produce and raise the next generation
This imposed great strains on them
How many women fought in the armed forces and what did this mean?
Over 0.5 million women fought in the armed forced, but instead of raising their status, this made them vulnerable
Soviet records and confessions of Red Army veterans have highlighted female soldiers were routinely sexually abused
What ‘human rights’ were affected?
Divorce was made more difficult
Homosexuality was outlawed
Abortions were outlawed
Taxes were increased on families with less than two children as an incentive or them to produce more members of the workforce
How did the education system change?
A series of education reforms were introduced
10 years of compulsory education
1929 – 1940 : the number of children attending school rose from 12 to 35 million
1926 – 1939 : the literacy rate for the population over the age of 9 rose from 51% to 88%
