5)Formation of RBC - red marrow yellow marrow
(Adult flat bones = red marrow scapula ribs pelvis sternum incancellous in long bones such as femur )

6)Storeage of minerals- act as a resivoir for calcium 99% and phosphorus 85% important for muscle and nerves

Structure of flat bone

A

2 Thin-layers of compact bone with cancellus bone in between provides resistance against impact injuries

Structure of short bones

A

Mainly cancellous bone surrounded by thin-layer of compact bone

Cancellous bone contains thin layers or sheets of bone and is able to absorb compression forces

Layers arranged according to predominant lines of stress

Support stability little movement
