Respiratory System Flashcards
Describe the surface anatomy of the thorax
anterior axillary line
midclavicular line —– clavical
midsternal line ——– sternal angle of Louis
What occurs at the sternal angle of Louis
dermatome junction of C4/T2 vertebral level - IVD T4/T5 2nd costal cartilage articulates Trachea bifurcates Start and end of arch of aorta SVC enters fibrous pericardium
Name the parts of the sternum
manubrium
body of sternum
xiphoid process
what are the true ribs
1-7
what are the false ribs
8-12
what are the floating ribs
11-12
Describe the lung borders
anterior - descends to midclavicular line crossing 6th rib
superior - 3cm above medial 1/3 clavicle
posterior - descends to scapular line at 10th rib
laterally- descends to midaxillary line crossing 8th rib
describe the plural borders
anterior - 8
posterior - 10
lateral - 12
describe the right lung
3 lobes - sup. mid, inf
2 fissures - horizontal and oblique
describe the left lung
2 lobes - sup,inf
1 fissure - oblique
what is the superior thoracic aperture
post - T1
laterally - 1st rib and coastal cartilage
ant - sup. border of manubrium
what is the inferior thoracic aperture
sup - xiphoid process
lateral - 7-10 costal cartilages
post - 11/12 rib and T12 vertebra
name the three intercostal muscles
superficial - inf.ant from rib above to rib below
middle - inf.post from lateral edge of costal groove and insert into sup. surface of rib below
deep - medial edge of costal groove and insert into sup. surface of rib below
what lies between the internal intercostal muscle and the innermost intercostal muscle
intercostal vein, artery and nerve
describe the thoracic aorta
thoracic aorta at the back then you have the posterior intercostal arteries and then a lateral cutaneous branch of the posterior intercostal aorta. At the front you have the anterior intercostal artery and then the anterior cutaneous branch of intercostal nerve` and then at the front the internal thoracic aorta
