Cell Exchange Materials Flashcards
TOPIC 1
Extracellular Fluid
The fluid immediately outside the cell.
Intracellular Fluid
The fluid found inside the cell.
Fluid Mosaic Model
The currently accepted model of the cell membrane, including phospholipid bilayer, carrier proteins, channel proteins.
Cell/ Plasma Membrane
Surrounds the cell and forms the outer boundary.
Phospholipid
Lipid molecules containing phosphate. (hydrophilic)
Phospholipid Bilayer
Two layers of phospholipids. With a hydrophilic head, and a hydrophobic tail, to allow only fat soluble substances to pass through.
Differentially/ Semi- Permeable Membrane
A membrane which allows only SOME substances to pass through.
Hydrophilic
Water-loving
Hydrophobic
Water-hating
Channel Protein
A channel in the cell membrane which allows ions, water and small molecules through.
Carrier Protein
Carriers which are SPECIFIC and only bind to particular molecules.
Receptor Protein
A membrane protein.
Marker Protein
A membrane protein with an ID marker.
Passive Process
A process that doesn’t require energy.
Active Process
A process that does require energy.
