Tissues Flashcards
TOPIC 1
Differentiation
The process where new cells become specialised for particular functions.
Structural Organisation
cell -> tissue -> organ -> system
Organelles
Structures suspended in the cytoplasm that carries out specialised functions.
Cell
Basic building block of living things.
Tissue
Groups of cells that work together.
- connective
- muscular
- cardiac
- nervous
Organs
Groups of tissues that work together.
e.g stomach, heart
Systems
Groups of organs that work together.
e.g circulatory system, respiratory system
Organism
The living thing made up of integrated body systems.
Epithelial
Covering or lining tissue.
e.g the skin
Connective
Connective/ supporting tissue.
e.g bone, cartilage, tendons
Matrix
Non- cellular material which separates the tissue.
Muscle/ Muscular
- Skeletal
muscle that attaches to bones.
striated
voluntary - Smooth
found in the walls of organs
non- striated
involuntary - Cardiac
makes up the heart
involuntary
Muscle Fibres
Long, thin cells of muscular tissue.
Nervous
Tissue made up of neurons.
e.g spinal chord
Neurons
Specialised nerve cells.
