Cell Metabolism Flashcards
TOPIC 1
Metabolism
The sum of all chemical reactions that occur in the cell.
Catabolism
When large molecules are broken into smaller molecules.
Anabolism
When small molecules are built up into larger molecules.
Organic Compounds
Molecules that contain carbon.
Enzymes
Organic Catalyst which lowers the activation energy needed to start a chemical reaction.
Activation Energy
The energy needed to start a chemical reaction.
Substrate
The molecule on which the enzyme acts.
Active site
The part of the enzyme molecule that combines with the substrate.
Enzyme- Substrate
When the enzyme and substrate are combined.
Co- Factors
The substance that changes the shape of the active site so that the enzyme can combine with the substrate.
Co- Enzymes
Co- factors which are non- protein organic molecules
Cellular Respiration
The process of producing energy in the cell.
C6H12O6 + 6O2 -> 6CO2 + 6H2O + ATP
ATP
Adenine Triphosphate. (ENERGY)
ADP
Adenine Diphosphate.
Aerobic Respiration
Respiration with oxygen.
