9 Haematology II - leukocytes Flashcards
(41 cards)
What is the normal WBC count
4 - 11 x10^9 per L
What are the functions of WBC:
Immune response (defense against pathogens)
Toxin and waste removal
removal of damaged cells
What are some characteristics of WBCs?
- All nucleated
- All capable of amoeboid movement so can move in and out of the capillaries
- Do most work in the tissues
- Are all attracted to specific chemical stimuli
What is extravasation?
WBCs moving out of the capillaries
What is diapedisis?
WBCs moving out of the capillaries
What are the two different types of WBCs?
Granulocytes and agranulocytes
Name the granulocytes
- neutophil
- basophil
- eosinophil
Which WBCs are phagocytes?
neutrophils eosinophils and monocytes
Name the agranulocytes
monocytes
lymphocytes
What is serum
Plasma without plasma proteins
What colour do eosinophils stain?
Red
Lymphocyte function:
Circulate between various lymphoid tissues and bodily tissue through lymph and blood
Involved in all immunological responses
- t cells (transplant rejection)
-b cells (differentiate into plasma cells and secrete antibodies )
-NK cells (surveillance - important in preventing cancer)
Whats the pneumonic for remembering all types of WBCs
Never Let Monkeys Eat Bananas neutrophils lymphocytes monocytes eosinophils basophils
Neutrophil nucleus:
2-5 lobes depending on maturity
Neutrophil time in blood
10 hours
Neutrophil function
- First line of defence
- Main constituent in pus (colour can be used to determine bacteria present)
- phagocytosis
Eosinophil size:
10-12 micrometers
Eosinophil nucleus
2 lobes
Eosinophil time in the blood
8-10 hours
Eosinophil time in tissues
1-3 days
Eosinophil function:
- helps neutrophils
- involved in allergies and asthma
- release toxic compounds such as cytotoxic enzymes and NO
- combats parasites
Basophils size
8-10 micrometers
Basophil percentage in blood
less than 1%
Basophil nucleus
bi lobed s shape
-cytoplasm also contains large granules of heparin and histamine
