“an,” “auf,” and “in” are only used with certain landscapes / locations! Whenever we answer a question that says “to where?” we use it in the accusative!

"an" is strictly used for going to trips to waters / for movements with a natural end (in accusative) :
Ex. to the ocean.
      to the sea.
      to the coast.
      to the lake.
      to the beach.
      to the river.
      to the bank / riverside / shore.

“in” is used for going to mountains, deserts, forests, and cardinal points (in accusative) :
Ex. to the mountains.
to the mountains / mountain range.
to the valley.
to the desert.
to the forest / jungle.
to the north / east / south / west.

If a question is asking "where something is," you can answer in the dative and do it just as you would have used "auf," "an," and "in" with the rules for locations.

Note : “from” is used on the dative.
