5- Biological Basis of Nervous System Disorders Flashcards

1
Q

Schizophrenia

A
  • dopamine hypothesis - too much
  • mania is too much ser and NorEpi
  • birth trauma/hypoxemia
  • excessive marijuana in adolescence

Q

Depressive

A
  • decreased serotonin, dopamine, norepi
  • mania is too much ser and NorEpi
  • monoamine theory for depression/mania
  • partial family linkage
  • high cortisol, hippocampal atrophy, high glucose in amygdala/emotion
  • MS/bipolar= more at risk of bipolar = genetic risk

Q

Parkinson’s

A
  • low dopamine productino in substantia nigra, which is part of basal ganglia
treatment: L-DOPA = precursor of dopamine- converted to dopamine when reaches brain
  • bradykinesia = slow movement
  • resting tremor - when not using
  • pill-rolling tremors
  • masklike faces - no expression
  • cogwheel rigidity- muscle tension stops movement
  • shuffling gait
