A&P II - The Heart Flashcards
(48 cards)
Where is the heart located?
In the mediastinum, between the lungs, superior to the diaphragm
What is the pericardial cavity?
A space within the mediastinum that houses the heart and reduces friction
What is the cardiac notch?
A depression in the left lung where the apex of the heart rests
What is the base of the heart?
The superior part of the heart near the third costal cartilage
What is the apex of the heart?
The inferior tip of the heart, between the 4th and 5th ribs
What are the layers of the heart wall from outermost to innermost?
Epicardium, Myocardium, Endocardium
What does the epicardium do?
Secretes lubricating serous fluid, contains blood vessels
What is the myocardium composed of?
Cardiac muscle cells, responsible for contraction
What is the endocardium composed of?
Endothelium and thin connective tissue; lines chambers and valves
What are the four chambers of the heart?
Right atrium, Right ventricle, Left atrium, Left ventricle
What does the right atrium do?
Receives deoxygenated blood from SVC, IVC, and coronary sinus
What does the right ventricle do?
Pumps deoxygenated blood to the lungs
What does the left atrium do?
Receives oxygenated blood from the pulmonary veins
What does the left ventricle do?
Pumps oxygenated blood to the systemic circuit via the aorta
What is the interatrial septum?
The wall that separates the two atria
What is the interventricular septum?
The wall that separates the two ventricles
What is the atrioventricular septum?
Houses openings for heart valves between atria and ventricles
What are the four valves of the heart?
Tricuspid, Pulmonary semilunar, Mitral (bicuspid), Aortic semilunar
Where is the tricuspid valve located?
Between the right atrium and right ventricle
Where is the pulmonary semilunar valve located?
Between right ventricle and pulmonary trunk
Where is the mitral valve located?
Between left atrium and left ventricle
Where is the aortic semilunar valve located?
Between left ventricle and aorta
What are chordae tendineae?
Tendinous cords that prevent valve prolapse by anchoring valve flaps
What are papillary muscles?
Muscles that contract with the ventricles to stabilize valve flaps
