A3: Theory Of Planned Behaviour Flashcards
What is theory of Plann behaviour?
‘changes in behaviour can be predicted from our intentions to change which intern is the outcome of personal attitudes towards the behaviour in question our believes about what others think and our perceived ability to control our behaviour
What are the three factors in the Theory of Planned Behavior that influence behavior change?
- Personal attitudes
- subjective norms
- Perceived behaviour control.
What is personal attitudes?
The balance of a persons favourable and unfavourable attitudes about their behaviour
What are subjective norms?
Belief about whether people who matter to you approved or disapprove of their behaviour
Perceived behavioural control
How much control a person believes they have over their own behaviour
One strength
Is that there is research supporting its prediction. Studies show that positive attitudes, subjective norms and PBC can predict both the intention to drinking and actual behaviour change - just like the theory suggests.
Another strength
Is that parts of the TPB ave supported by evidence. Attitudes have been shown to predict healthy eating intentions even it subjective norms doesn’t- this means some parts of the TPB can still help people change their behaviour like loosing weight.
One weakness
Of the TPB is that it can’t always predict real behaviour. People may intend to k like stop gambling but don’t follow through. This gap between the intention and the action means the TPB may not work well for behaviour change.
Another weakness
Is that the TPB works better for short-term changes.it predicts behaviour well when action happens soon after intention, but not for long-term goals so it is less Usenet in real-lite situations where changes takes time.
