purpose of workplace health and safety regulations in the health sector
- to maintain the safety and wellbeing of both the individual and healthcare workers
- to reduce risk to the individual and healthcare professionals

define ‘wellbeing’ (WHO)
a state of complete physical, mental and social wellbeing and not merely the absence of disease
Purpose of Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981
legal guidelines for employers within the health sector to provide adequate and appropriate equipment, facilities, and personnel to ensure their employees receive immediate attention if they are injured or taken ill at work.
Needs Assessment
- nature of work done
- any workplace hazards or risks
- characteristics and size of the workforce

- ensure there is an appointed person to take charge of first-aid arrangements
- provide adequate facilities and a suitably stocked first-aid kit

define ‘medicine’

define ‘medical device’
a healthcare product or piece of equipment that someone uses for a medical purpose. medical devices can diagnose, monitor or treat disease and help people with physical impairments become more independent
The overarching responsibilities of trained first aiders
- providing first-aid treatment for minor injuries and illness
- ensuring, where necessary, the the casualty is referred for further treatment, appropriate to the situation.
- ensuring that the first-aid box is kept clean, tidy and stocked.
- any support provided treats the casualty fairy and without discrimination
