Why was abolition successful?

A

Abolitionists - fighting their case
Economic - manufacturing became more important than farming
Religious - Christian’s were against
Evidence gathering - Thomas Clarkson found shackles, thumbscrews etc
Former slaves - Mary prince and more published their autobiography
Former slavers - John Newton was former slave ship captain came forward
Anti slavery groups - 5000 petitions
Support inside government - prime minister agreed (William Pitt)
Support outside government -not compatible with Scot’s law
Humanitarian reasons - denied basic human rights
Campaign methods - meetings
White men suffering too - 20,000 men died on slave ships
