Treatment of slaves when first captured?
Beaten with stickers to make them walk faster
Taken from their home - ambushed
They were connected to other slaves by their necks by chains
The weather was hot - little food or water was provided, many died at this stage
Examined by surgeons for health when first arrived at factories
Process of dehumanising - remove clothes and hair
Kept in underground shells - 1000 slaves all chained
Died from disease -malaria, yellow fever
In 1770 half of all slaves died before transportation
Effects on Africa?
Disease spread such as small pox
Transport networks improved on the coast
African kings became rich - selling their men
Africans moved inland - less housing
Trading links developed
Lived in fear
Cultural development - literacy skills, metal work due to goods from Britain
Conflict between African tribes - less powerful society’s were destroyed
