What is a child ‘at risk’?
A child who is vulnerable to abuse or harm.
Who is a child ‘in need’?
Defined by law as a person under 18 who needs extra support to improve their opportunities.
What are different types of abuse?
Physical abuse
Emotional abuse
Sexual abuse
Neglect
Domestic abuse
Bullying and cyber-bullying
Child criminal exploitation
What are individual factors that may mean a child or young person is at risk or in danger?
They have a physical or developmental disability
The child or young person had been impacted by an abusive relationship
Lack of secure attachment with their parent or carer
What are parental factors that may mean a child is at risk or in danger?
Parent has already been abused or already abused as a child or young person
Parents have unrealistic expectations of a child
Parents need support with parenting skills such as managing dietary or health needs
Parental isolation
Parental mental illness
Parental drug of alcohol abuse
What are environmental factors that may mean a child is at risk or in danger?
Overcrowding in the home
Poverty or lack of opportunity to improve resource
Domestic abuse already in the home
How may adults use their position of trust in a negative way?
Taking advantage of an individual
Gaining unauthorised access to private or sensitive information for their own or others advantage
Manipulating an individual
Using a position of trust to bully, humiliate or undermine
Threatening punishment for non-compliance with unreasonable demands
What are different ways children could be groomed or exploited?
-By adults in a psotion of trust
-By interfamilial abuse
-Through the use of inappropriate games
-Through online materials/communication
-Through observing sexual behaviour of others/being exposed to pornographic content
-Through threats of harm to the individual or family
-County lines
What are signs of grooming or exploitation?
-Changes in typical behaviour
-Becoming withdrawn or isolated
-Inability to concentrate during activities
-Sexualised behaviour, language that isn’t appropriate
What are indicators that an adult in a setting may have an inappropriate relationship with a child?
-Being over-affectionate or flirtatious, giving gifts or showing favouritism
-Spending time alone with the child
-Making friends with parents + visited
-Using private messages or social media to communicate with a child
What is whistleblowing?
Reporting a co-worker for something that is wrong and that affects others.

Educational attainment
-Brain development could be affected
-Absence or lateness may affect work
-May suffer low self-esteem and inability to focus

Attachments and relationships
-Anxiety
-Withdrawn behaviour

-May be unable to tell others what’s happening
-May be unaware that they are being abused

-Loss of appetite may affect growth and development
-Greater risk of health conditions such as diabetes, malnutrition, poor lung function, oral health problems

-Cause extreme anxiety/loss of confidence
