Background: The murder of 8 year old Sarah Payne by Ray Whitling who had previous convictions of child sex offences
-Parents & carers can now ask police is someone in contact with their child has a record of child sex offences
-petition for over 700,000 signatures–>raised awareness
-CHILD SEX OFFENDER SCHEME IN ENGLAND & WALES 2011

-Angus campaigned to improve road safety
-police=”operation steerside” for dangerous driving
-4 tier approach–>Pursue, prevent, protect, prepare
-2020=made 107 arrests for dangerous driving
-Bradford MP raised issues abought toughening driving laws
-POLICE CRIME, SENTENCING & COURTS BILL=a life sentence for causing death by dangerous driving increased from 14 years.
What is Clare’s law? (individual)
Backstory: George Appleton had a history of sexual assault and murdered his ex girlfriend
-Clare made several complains to the cops about harassment, attempted rape and threatened murder. cps did nothing
-Clare’s father campaigned to allow women to know about their partners violent past
-DOMESTIC VIOLENCE DISCLOSURE SCHEME IN ENGLAND AND WALES 2014 gives person right to ask police about disclosed information a partner
-protects potential victims
What is the double jeopardy law? (individualistic)
Background: Ann Min campaigned to abolish double jeopardy.
-Dunlop confessed to his murder in 1998 whilst serving a prison sentence on a savage attack
-double jeopardy=a person cant be put on trail for the same crime they’ve been acquitted for (cant be proven guilty or innocent)
CRIMINAL JUSTICE ACT 2003:allows retrial of serious crimes. can only take place if new and compelling evidence emerges.
what is the snowdrop campaign? (pressure groups)
Background: Dunblane massacre 1996–>Thomas Hilton used a legally owned handgun to shoot 16 pupils ages 4/5 and a teacher
-sought a ban on private ownership of a handgun
-campaigned gained over 750,000 signatures in 6 weeks
-Cullen report=public enquiry and recommended tighter gun laws.
-FIREARMS AMMENDMENTS ACT 1997 banned private ownership of all cartridge and ammunition hand guns
what is the British lung foundation (pressure groups)
-raises awareness about lung disease, the dangers that cause it and how to look after your lungs
-petition got 50,000 signatures in 2011 to change law about smoking with children in cars
-researched reports on the dangers of 2nd hand smoking and showed that over 430,000 children where exposed each week.
-released 10 myths about smoking with children in the car
-have 25,000 followers but are also followed by influential MPs
-FAMILIES AND CHILDREN ACT 2014 banned smoking with children in the car
