Active voice
The subject does the action of the verb. Subj. + verb + obj..
Ex: The knight defended the castle.
Passive voice
The subject receives the action of the verb. Obj. + form of “to be” + past participle + by + subj. (optional).
Ex: The castle was defended by the knight.
The cat chased the mouse.
Active
The mouse was chased by the cat.
Passive
The chef cooked dinner.
Active
Dinner was cooked by the chef.
Passive
The general devised a strategy that would outmaneuver the enemy before dawn.
Active
A strategy that would outmaneuver the enemy before dawn was devised by the general.
Passive
The council will announce their decision regarding the peace treaty after sunset.
Active
The decision regarding the peace treaty will be announced by the council after sunset.
