Simple sentence
One independent clause.
Ex: I enjoy reading novels.
Compound sentence
Two or more independent clauses, joined by a coordinating conjunction or a semicolon.
Ex: I enjoy reading novels, and I also write poetry.
Complex sentence
One independent clause and at least one dependent clause.
Ex: Although I enjoy reading novels, I rarely find time to finish them.
Compound-complex sentence
Two or more independent clauses and at least one dependent clause.
Ex: Although I enjoy reading novels, I rarely find time to finish them, and my bookshelf keeps getting fuller.
The ancient ruins stood silently beneath the glow of the setting sun.
Simple
The explorers reached the summit, but the storms forced them to descend.
Compound
Even though the soldiers were exhausted, they continued to guard the outpost through the night.
Complex
Although the sky was dark and the wind howled through the trees, the hikers pressed on, and they refused to turn back.
Compound-complex
Shadows crept across the ruined battlefields, hiding the remnants of a long-forgotten war.
Simple
The emperor feared rebellion within his court; consequently, he ordered the secret police to monitor his advisors.
Compound
While the flames consumed the ancient library, scholar frantically carried what manuscripts they could salvage into the streets.
Complex
