Independent Clause
Group of words that has a subject and a verb and expresses a complete thought. It can stand alone as a sentence.
Ex: I love reading.
Dependent Clause
Group of words that has a subject and a verb but does not express a complete thought. It cannot stand alone as a sentence–it needs to be attached to an independent clause to make sense.
Ex: Although I love reading
The storm knocked out the power in the entire neighborhood.
Independent
Because the storm knocked out the power, we lit candles around the house.
Dependent
Since I had nothing else to do, I decided to stay home and work on my project.
