Active transport and respiration Flashcards
(7 cards)
Define respiration
the process that living organisms use to produce energy, commonly through the intake of oxygen and release of CO2
list three examples of active transport
pumps (carrier protein + ATP), exocytosis and endocytosis
define respiration
the process in which the cell breaks down glucose (generally sourced from photosynthesis) into useable energy such as ATP
What form of respiration requires oxygen, produces lots of ATP, is efficient and occurs in the mitochondria?
aerobic respiration
which form of respiration does NOT require oxygen, is less efficient and produces less energy and occurs in the cytoplasm?
anaerobic respiration
What is an example of a cell using anaerobic respiration?
prokaryotes (aka bacteria) use anaerobic respiration in low-oxygen environments
What’s an example of aerobic respiration being used?
Generally eukaryotic organisms (e.g. humans, animals, plants)
