Formative Test Questions Flashcards
(17 cards)
Compared to cells, pure water is always…
hypotonic (lower concentration)
What is the solute?
The molecule that has less of a presence (there are less of them)
What is the solvent?
The molecule that has more of a presence (there are more of them)
Define diffusion
the idea of any particle going from an area of HIGH concentration to LOW concentration
Define osmosis
the diffusion of water (a molecule traveling from a hypotonic solution to a hypertonic solution as a method of spreading the solute and solvent ratio evenly)
Define net flow
When the solvent moves both directions (through some form of semi-permeable membrane or opening) but mainly one direction
What is the correct process for the cell to synthesis proteins?
DNA –> RNA –> amino acid chain
what four organelles are utilized for transport of proteins?
nucleus; ribosome; ER; golgi body
is multi-cell structures a typical characteristic of a living thing?
No
TRUE OR FALSE (regarding prophase in mitosis): chromatin is further condensed into visible structures
false
why would the cell have different amounts of DNA in it between the G1 and G2 cycle?
Because, in the S phase, the DNA is duplicated resulting in the cells ability to divide
How is a virus non-living? (use the 7 characteristics of living things as a basis)
Cannot keep a stable temperature (homeostasis), not made up of cells, doesn’t make its own energy and don’t grow
What, out of a multicellular organism and a single cellular organism, would be most efficient in diffusing water and nutrients to it’s insides?
More surface area means more efficiency in diffusion. Therefore the multicellular organism would be most efficient - there’s more surface area for the same amount of volume
Why should plant cells do both respiration and photosynthesis?
The food is first made by photosynthesis then converted through respiration into a useful form of energy
What are the prime differences between aerobic and anerobic respiration?
The need for oxygen to be present, the amount of energy (ATP) that is produced for cell use and the alternate waste products and the effects that it has on the cell
What is the chemical equation for photosynthesis?
6CO₂ + 6H₂O + Sunlight → C₆H₁₂O₆ + 6O₂
What is the process of protein transport? (hint: there are 4 basic steps)
- protein synthesis at ribosomes (mRNA translated to polypeptide chain)
- polypeptide transported to ER to be folded and processed
- moves to golgi body for further modification/sorting
- packaged and transported to final destination
