A
  • slows conduction through the AV node
  • most cases of PSVT involve AV node reentry. Adenosine interrupts AV nodal circuit and stops tachycardia - restoring normal sinus rhythm

Absolute Contraindications

A
  • 2nd or 3rd degree Heart blocks
  • poison or drug induced tachycardia
  • known hypersensitivity
  • allergy

Precautions and Side Effects

A
  • can cause brief asystole, dizziness, facial flushing, headache, nausea and transient shortness of breath
  • IV/IO can produce broncospasm in asthmatics
  • if patient becomes hemodynamically unstable, cardioversion should occur
