Aerobic & Anaerobic respiration Flashcards
(16 cards)
What is respiration
- The process of transferring energy from glucose to the cells
- All cells in a living organism respire
Where does respiration take place
- In the mitochondria
What type of reaction is respiration
- Exothermic
What are the 3 main uses of respiration
- Make larger molecules from smaller ones (proteins from amino acids)
- Use to contract muscles (so that animals can move)
- Enables mammals and birds to mantaon their body temperature
Descripe a lipid molecule
- 1 molecule of glycerol
- 3 molecules of fatty acids
What is the word equation for aerobic respiration
- Glucose + Oxygen —-> Carbon Dioxide + Water
What is the symbol equation for aerobic respiration
- C6H12O6 + 6O2 —-> 6CO2 + 6H2O
What is aerobic respiration
- Occurs when there is a plentiful supply of oxygen
- Involves the complete breakdown of glucose
- Most efficient way of transferring energy
What is anaerobic respiration
- Occurs when there is not enough oxygen to oxidise the glucose
- Inly occurs in an emergency (doing exercise)
- Does not release a lot of energy
- Involces the incomplete breakdown of glucose
- Releases lactic acid
What is the equation for anaerobic respiration in animals
Glucose —-> Lactic Acid
What is the equation for anaerobic respiration in plants and yeast
Glucose —-> Ethanol + Carbon Dioxide
How do organism get the required reactants for respiration
- Plants - get glucose through photosynthesis
- Plants - oxygen diffuses into the leaf via the stomata
- Animals - oxygen is obtained through the environment
- Animals - get glucose through food
What is the use of the products of fermentation
- Ethanol - alcoholic drinks
- Carbon Dioxide - used to make bread rise
What is metabolism
- The sum of all of the chemical reactions that take place in a living organism
Name a molecule made from glucose in plants and one in animals
- Plants - cellulose (used to strenghthen cell walls)
- Animals - glycogen (storage molecule in animal cells)
What is excess proteins broken into
- Urea excreted through urine
