DNA 3 - structure and coding Flashcards

1
Q

What is DNA made up of

A
  • DNA is a polymer that is made up of repeating units of nucleotides (monomers)
  • These nucleotides hold the two strands of the double helix together

Q

What is the make up of a nucleotide?

A
  • Consists of a phosphate, sugar and base
  • All nucleotides have the same sugar and phosphate
  • As there are 4 different bases, there are 4 different nucleotides

Q

How does DNA code for a protein?

A
  • A section of DNA is read in triplets / codons
  • Each triplet codes for a specific amino acid
  • Amino acids join and fold up to make a protein
