Retribution
A
- punishment, e.g eye for an eye
- point is that if someone commits a crime they should be punished
- very simple and is a vote

A
- what society will tolerate and what it will not
- boundaries set by society to what is seen as a crime

Reform and Rehabilitation
A
- aim is to reform and rehabilitate D by using alternative sentencing options
- aim is to treat and cure the ‘criminal defiance’ to stop them from committing a crime
- the rehabilitative sentence is based on what D needs rather than the offence

Deterrence
A
- aim is to stop D and the community from committing crimes by promoting unpleasant sentences and possibly longer sentences
- the individual deterrences stop the offender from committing again and the general deterrences stop the public from committing.

Protection from public
A
- aim to protect the public
- LASPO 2012 introduced new sentences which protect the public

Reparation
A
- aim is to compensate victim from the crime, usually by ordering D to pay a sum of money
- aim is to make victim see the impact of their crime on the individual
