How many members are in the Jury?

Work of the jury
A
- sit in CROWN COURT and hear TRIABLE EITHER WAY and INDICTABLE offences
- called in for 2 weeks
- 500,000 jurors are called in yearly
- before the trial, jurors are shown a DVD on their role as the jury
- have to hear the case, weigh up evidence and decide the verdict
- they are not legally qualified
- discuss/deliberate case in a private room, should not be discussed outside the room.
- aim to reach a unanimous verdict but if not possible after 2 hours then verdict has to be of 10 to 2.

Qualification/Selection
A
- have to be ages 18 - 75 years old
- have to be on electoral register
- have to have lived in UK for 5 years since 13th birthday

Permanent disqualification from being a juror
A
- served a sentence for 5+ years
- imprisoned for public protection
- imprisoned for life

10 year disqualification from being a juror
A
- served imprisonment or suspended sentence
- had a community order
- offenders on bail

Ineligible for being a juror
A
those with a mental disorder

Deferral
A
- booked hospital appointments or operations
- booked holidays
- iminent examinations

Excusals
A
- done jury service in the past 2 years
- if they was a juror for a particularly distressing trial
- members of armed forces being called away
- lack of capacity e.g unable to speak english
- over the age of 65
- MPs or MEPs
- those with good reason like mother with young child

Jury Vetting
A
- 2 types
1) routine check - to ensure no disqualification
2) for exceptional cases, police, special branch and security service records are checked

Jury Challenges
A
1) challenge for cause - prosecution + defence can challenge for cause, the potential juror is disqualified
2) stand by for the crown - prosecution may ask juror to ‘stand by for the crown’
3) challenge the array - the whole jury can be challenged if a juror was not selected randomly
