Air pollution Flashcards
(8 cards)
What problems can particulates in the air cause
-if they are i… they can get stuck in the l… and cause d…
—>r… problems
-they r… sunlight back into s… which can cause … dimming
-if they are inhaled they can get stuck in the lungs and cause damage
—>respiratory problems
-they reflect sunlight back into space which can cause global dimming
What happens when there is not enough oxygen for fuels to burn
Incomplete combustion
What is released in incomplete combustion
-p… of soot (c…) and u… fuel
-c… monoxide
-particulates of soot (carbon) and unburnt fuel
-carbon monoxide
Negative effects of carbon monoxide
-it can stop your b… from properly carrying o… around the body, by binding to your h… so less O2 can be c…
—>can lead to f.. a coma or even …
-its very hard to d… as it has no c… or smell
-it can stop your blood from properly carrying oxygen around the body, by binding to your haemoglobin so less O2 can be carried
—>can lead to fainting a coma or even death
-its very hard to detect as it has no colour or smell
How are nitrogen oxides formed
-nitrogen and oxygen in the air react because of the heat of the burning
How is sulfur dioxide formed
-some fossil fuels eg coal can contain sulfur impurities, this then becomes oxidised
What happens when sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides mix with clouds
They form dilute sulfuric acid and dilute nitric acid, which falls as acid rain
Effects of acid rain
-kills p… and animals
-damages b… and statues
-makes m… corrode
-kills plants and animals
-damages buildings and statues
-makes metal corrode
