anaerobic respiration Flashcards
(9 cards)
What does glycolysis involve?
Glycolysis and the production of pyruvate
Where does the pyruvate not go?
The mitochondria
How much ATP is produced during glycolysis?
2 molecules
How is the pyruvate reduced?
Using reduced NAD produced during glycolysis
This enables the regeneration of NAD.
What does the reduction of pyruvate enable?
The regeneration of NAD
What does the regeneration of NAD ensure?
A continual supply of NAD is provided for glycolysis to continue
What is the product of reducing pyruvate in animals?
Lactate
What is the product of reducing pyruvate in plants (yeast)?
Ethanol and carbon dioxide
What would happen if NAD wasn’t regenerated?
Glycolysis would stop as all the NAD would be reduced and there would be no NAD available to allow the oxidation of triose phosphate to pyruvate
