structures and properties of atp Flashcards
(10 cards)
Where does any energy come from in an organism?
ATP
What is the other name for ATP?
Universal energy carrier
Why is ATP useful?
Energy is released in small amounts, energy is released in a single step reaction, it is quickly broken down and resynthesised, energy is released immediately, soluble in water, the inorganic phosphate can be used to phosphorylate other compounds
Where can ATP be resynthesized?
Respiration or photosynthesis
What is the difference in energy given off as?
Heat
What is ATP made from?
ADP and Pi
What is the enzyme needed to make ATP?
ATP synthase
What is the enzyme needed to hydrolyse ATP?
ATP hydrolase
What is ATP used in?
Active transport, synthesis reactions, muscle contraction, cell division, light independent reaction, first stage of glycolysis
Is ATP stored in organisms?
No, it is continuously hydrolysed and resynthesised
