Q

Mass spectrometry

A
  • used to determine the structure of a molecule and if certain elements are present
  • ions are formed by colliding a beam of electrons into a sample to loose an electron - now has a positive charge
  • positive ions from the sample are detected by a magnetic field based on mass charge ration
  • fragmentation occurs when the beam of electrons breaks a covalent bond in the parent molecule
  • produces one part of a molecule that has a positive charge (can be detected) and one neutral part
