Angular momentum Flashcards
Lesson 21 (6 cards)
What are the two things Angular momentum depend on?
-Moment of Inertia: The resistance of an object to change its state when rotating, greater the inertia the order it becomes to rotate
-Angular Velocity: The rate of movement in rotation, how quickly something is rotating/spinning
What is the equation for angular momentum?
Angular momentum= Moment of Inertia x Angular Velocity
What is the relationship between ‘Moment of Inertia’ and ‘Angular Velocity’?
-Both of these qualities are inversely proportional and will always have an affect on the other
-As one increases the other will decrease
What are the two things Moment of Inertia depend on?
- The Mass of the Object
- The distribution of this mass around the axis
-The closer the mass is to the axis of rotation, the easier it is to turn- so the moment of inertia is low, the further the mass is to the axis of rotation, the harder it is to turn- so the moment of inertia is high
What will increasing the distance of distribution of mass do?
Increasing the distance of the distribution of mass from the axis will increase the moment of inertia and decrease angular velocity
What does mass and angular momentum have in common?
Angular momentum and mass are both constant they remain constant unless an external force acts upon it
