Fluid mechanics- Drag Flashcards
Lesson 24 (12 cards)
What is fluid mechanics?
Fluid mechanics is the study of fluids (gases and Liquids) and how forces affect them
What are fluid dynamics?
Fluid dynamics is a part of fluid mechanics and are affected by fluid forces
What are fluid forces?
drag and lift
What sports do fluid forces have effects on?
cycling, swimming and sprinting and can affect projectiles such as balls, discus’s and javelins
What are drag forces?
-A drag force is a resistance force which slows a body or object down
-It acts in the opposite direction to movement it has a negative effect on velocity
What are the two types of drag you need to know?
Surface drag (skin drag)
Form drag (shape drag)
What is surface/skin drag?
Caused by friction when the fluid environment passes over the surface of an object or the body
What is form/shape drag?
How the size and shape of an object/body can affect how water/air pass over it
What do the forces effect that influences drag?
Forces that affect the leading edge increase drag
Forces that affect the trailing edge reduce drag
What is streamlining?
Altering a body/object so that it passes through the air/water more efficiently
What is Drafting in cycling?
A large form drag also offers less turbulent air for anything that follows this is called a slipstream
What are factors that increase and reduce drag?
- the velocity of the moving object
- The cross sectional area of the moving body
- The shape and surface characteristics of the moving body
