Animal and Plant Organelles Flashcards
(20 cards)
What is the primary function of the Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum?
Synthesis and transport of lipids and steroids.
What is the structure of the Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum?
Tubular and not connected with Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum, no ribosomes attached.
What is the function of Golgi Bodies?
Packing and transport of materials (proteins and lipid molecules) inside or outside the cell.
What is the structure of a chromosome?
Thread-like structure made up of chromatin, contains DNA as chromosomes.
What is the function of chromosomes?
Carry genetic information (DNA) and control functions of cells.
What is the function of lysosomes?
Digestion of substances, intracellular and extracellular.
What is the structure of the nuclear membrane?
Double membrane with pores, surrounds all nuclear material.
What is the function of the nuclear membrane?
Keeps nuclear material separate from cytoplasm.
What is the structure of mitochondria?
Sausage-shaped, double membrane with inner membrane.
What is the function of mitochondria?
Site of aerobic respiration, therefore, site of energy production, known as the powerhouse of the cell.
What is the structure of chloroplasts?
Membrane-bound, contains chlorophyll, lens-shaped.
What is the function of chloroplasts?
Contains chlorophyll. Site of photosynthesis, utilising light energy to make organic molecules.
What is the structure of ribosomes?
Granules with two lobes, can be scattered throughout the cytoplasm or attached to endoplasmic reticulum.
What is the function of ribosomes?
Site of protein synthesis.
What is the structure of the Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum?
Membrane-bound, has many ribosomes attached.
What is the function of the Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum?
Rapid transport of materials (proteins from ribosomes) out of the cell.
What is the structure of vacuoles in plant cells?
Single membrane, can change shape and size depending on water content.
What is the function of vacuoles in plant cells?
Store water for chemical processes and control turgidity.
The vacuole stores water, nutrients, and waste products, maintaining turgor pressure.
Function of nucleus?
Controls functions of cell. DNA contained within determines what proteins are produced.
Cell wall function?
Supports and maintains shape of plant.
Allows water to pass through.
