Define turgidity
State of being turgid or swollen especially due to high fluid content
Importance of turgidity in plant cells
Essential in plant cells to make them keep standing upright.
Plant cells that lose too much water have less turgor pressure.
Connection between turgidity, plasmolysis and osmosis
Turgidity occurs when water moves into a plant via osmosis.
Plasmolysis occurs when water moves out of plant via osmosis.
Define diffusion
Passive transport of particles from an area of high to low concentration until equilibrium of concentration.
Define osmosis
A special type of diffusion.
Movement of only water (H2O) molecules through a semi-permeable membrane from an area of low solute/salt concentration to an area of high solute/salt concentration until equilibrium of solution.
Define plasmolysis
The shrinking of protoplasm away from the cell wall of a plant or bacterium due to water loss from osmosis.
Thereby, resulting in gaps between the cell wall and the cell membrane.
Provide an example of the importance of diffusion in cellular/ biological function.
Within cells, oxygen diffuses from areas of higher concentration to areas with lower oxygen concentration, enabling cellular respiration and energy production.
Provide an example of the importance of osmosis in cellular/ biological function.
When the bloodstream becomes hypertonic compared to the fluid inside the body’s cells. To balance this concentration, water moves out of the cells and into the bloodstream via osmosis.
