Vancomycin needs to be pharmacologically monitored- measuring peak and trough concentrations

Do not administer quinolones with calcium or iron bc they chelate cations

Enteric GNRs, H. influenzae
Strep pneumoniae (moxifloxacin)

SE of tetracyclines


Nausea and vomiting
Photosensitivity
Oesophageal irritation
Dizziness and vertigo
Teeth discolouration

when is tetracyclines contraindicated?

pregnancy and very young children

SE of metronidazole


what drug interaction do we have to consider

N + V
Metallic taste in the mouth
Peripheral neuropathy
pancreatitis

Potentiates warfarin action so be careful when prescribing to patients on warfarin

when should nitrofurantoin be used?

uncomplicated cystitis ONLY
