What is the difference between PTSD and acute stress disorder?

A

Symptoms lasting at least 1 month = PTSD
Symptoms lasting <1 month is acute stress disorder

How many PTSD be seperated into mild, moderate, severe ptsd?

A

Mild : symptoms last <4 weeks

Moderate : Any PTSD pstient with symptoms <1 month

Severe : distress is umanageable by patient or causing impairment in funtioning for up to 3 months after event.

What is involved in Eye movement desensitisation and reprocessing for PTSD?

A

For severe PTSD after trauma CBT already tried

Original trauma is deliberately re-experienced in as much detail as possible. Whilst the patient does this, they fix their eyes on the therapist’s finger as it quickly passes from side to side in front of them. This aids memory processing.

A

H - hypervigilence : constantly on guard for threat, exaggerated startle response, sleep problems, irritability and difficulty concentrating.

A - avoidance : avoiding people, situations or circumstances resembling or associated with the event

R - Intrusive re-experiencing of event : distressing involuntary memories, flashbacks, nightmares.

E - Emotional numbing : lack of ability to experience feelings, feeling detached.
