Appraoches-cognitive Approach-role Of Schemas And Computor Models Flashcards

1
Q

Appraoches-cognitive approach
Is and it’s assumptions

A

Must refer to thought processes in order to explain behaviour
Assumptions
Thought processes can n should be studied scientifically, well controlled lab studs can investigate what we think
Works like computer input from senses processes n output produces eg language or behaviour
Stimulus n response only occur through thought processes

Q

Approaches -cognitive approach
Study of internal mental processes

A

Studies info processing ie way to extract ,store ,retrieve info to guide behaviour .study non-emperical thought by observing n making inferences(an assumption bout mental processes that’s not observed directly) bout going on in mind .use exp method allows develop theory bout processes leading to behaviour demonstrated

Q

Approaches -cognitive approach
Role of schemas

A

Schemas (mental framework incorporating ideas bout person or situation
Help brain to organise, interpret data formed through experince.
Useful cys quick processing, take shortcuts when huge data load
Also predict what may happen, how to respond in new situation
Everyone has distinct set cus of unique experince in world
Ppl from same cultures r similar schemas
From baby schemas-sucking hand we get more detailed ones as we get older

Q

Approaches -cognitive approach
Ways to study internal process Theoretical model including informational processing approach

A

Can be represented as diagrams ,to provide testable hypothesis bout mental process ,studied scientifically n inferences can be made.
Use model to describe behaviour through distinct steps enabling to test components individually n examin in detail
One way of doing All that is using info processing approach eg senses>cognition n memory >behaviour

Q

Approaches -cognitive approach
Ways to study internal process Theoretical model including
Computer analogy

A

Where human mind like computor concepts of central processing unit (the brain) -coding (turning info into usable format) ,stores (holds info)
Computer works by processing steps ,cog psychs see no reason y behaviour shouldn’t be explained this way eg student know exam coming up >think maybe useful to revise>starts revision program a good example is the MSM model

Q

Approaches
Cognitive processing
Computor analogy
How computers n humans differ

A

Computor receives all input
Human pays attention to very little amount of input
Can’t lose data unless corrupt or damages but human easily misplace n difficulty in recalling info
Choose to delete permanently humans can’t push somin
unpleasant deliberately from mind
Computor no emotion
Humans impacted strongly be emotion in way mind functions
Only knows as much info that’s inputed
Humans can try piece together mems n fill gaps

Q

Approaches cognitive approaches
Evaluation of computor analogy over simplistic

A

Comparing humans to computor ignores individual different n emotions in behaviour
Could be machine reductionism
Belief that human functions are result of units of activity eg memory stores -broken down into few basic units
Not adequate explanation of complex behaviour

Q

Approaches cognitive approaches
Evaluation of computor analogy
Over deterministic view

A

Comparing ppl to computers n seeing mechanically suggests humans lack freewill to control own behaviour so can’t be held responsible fr actions
Many disagree see ppl have free will to act in unique unpredictable way eg humanists do

Link debates

A

Cognitive processes may undervalue role of other factors eg bio n learning experiences.but Approaches did incorporate many aspects of role of bio in cognition n developed cog neuroscience
